While majority of users distrust news received on WhatsApp, almost a third of all respondents reposed faith in the messaging app. The MOTN survey, conducted by the Delhi-based CSDS in mid-2017, found that only 14 percent of all Indians used WhatsApp on a daily basis. A fifth of all respondents said they used WhatsApp on a daily basis, doubling the tally from last year. Even among the poor, the share of WhatsApp users has increased, while almost one in two upper class Indians are hooked to the app.

New Delhi (CNN) Indian police arrested 30 people after a man was lynched by a huge mob incensed by rumors of child kidnapping spread on WhatsApp. One of the children screamed, alarming locals who -- inspired by rumors spread on social media about child kidnapping gangs -- confronted the men and accused them of attempting to abduct the children. The men fled, but were attacked by a mob of around 2,000 people a few miles ahead after messages were sent about them on WhatsApp. WhatsApp messages warning residents of possible kidnappers had been circulating in the area for 10 to 15 days. A day before the transgender attack, a man with mental health problems was beaten up in Pahadishareef, also in southern Hyderabad, over WhatsApp rumors that he was a member of a kidnap gang.

WhatsApp fights hoax messages in India after rumors led to killings

As it stated in WhatsApp is working on a new feature to help prevent the spread of hoax messages in India after a spate of lynchings were triggered by rumors shared on the messaging service. Over the past six weeks, nearly a dozen people have been killed in separate incidents after being falsely accused of child abduction based on WhatsApp rumors. "Irresponsible and explosive messages filled with rumors and provocation are being circulated on WhatsApp," India's technology ministry said in a statement. The company recently partnered with Boom Live, an Indian fact-checking organization, to help combat rumors on its platform.
