Participants were warned about possibility threats and encouraged to make sure their messages were confidential.Only 14 percent of users in the first phase managed to successfully authenticate their recipient. "Once we told people about the authentication ceremonies, generality people can do it. But it was not simple, people were frustrated and it took them also long," noted Daniel Zappala, Professor, Computer Science, BYU.Most people don't invest when and effort to understand and use these safety measures because they don't trial significant safety problems. But there's always a danger in on-line communications. The researchers are this time working to develop a mechanism that makes the 'authentication ceremony' quick and automatic. "If we can perform the authentication ceremony behind the scenes for users automatically or effortlessly, we can address these problems without necessitating user education," told Vaziripour.

Using WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger may put your online information at risk
Popular messaging applications Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp leave people exposed to fraud or hacking because users don't know how to use important safety options, scientists have warned. "We wanted to understand how typical users are protecting their privacy," told Elham Vaziripour, PhD student at the Brigham Young University in the US. Even though WhatsApp and Viber encrypt messages by default, all three messaging applications also require an authentication ceremony to ensure true security. The authentication ceremony allows users to confirm the identify of their intended conversation partner, and makes sure no other person - even the company providing the messaging application - can intercept messages. In the second phase, entrants were again asked to share a credit card number, however in this round researchers emphasized the importance of authentication ceremonies.
