Here are the basics:To view a Status uploaded by your friend, open the Status tab. You are given three options:My Contacts : All of your WhatsApp contacts can view your Status. You'll know if you have access to Status on iOS when the Contacts tab gets replaced with a camera icon (see photo above), and the far-left tab reads "Status." Android users will see a new Camera icon to the left of the Chats tab, next to a new Status tab.

WhatsApp becomes the fourth Facebook product to clone Snapchat stories. As on Snapchat, WhatsApp stories are posted from an in-app camera. It was followed by Facebook Messenger and then Facebook itself, both of which are still testing the feature in a small number of countries. Instead, Snapchat arrived and began swallowing up large chunks of the younger demographic, instilling an existential terror in Facebook that has transformed its product roadmap over the past year. Here's another gift from Facebook to Snapchat on the latter's road to an initial public offering: WhatsApp has cloned Snapchat's popular stories format and is using it to replace its old text-based status messages.

WhatsApp tested the feature for beta users in November, and now the Status tab is rolling out worldwide on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. WhatsApp could put the brakes on Snapchat's international growth with today's launch of WhatsApp Status, a new tab for sharing decorated photos, videos and GIFs that disappear after 24 hours. The new Status feature replaces WhatsApp's old AOL Instant Messenger-style away messages. It's another Facebook-owned Snapchat Stories copycat, but the twist is that it's end-to-end encrypted like WhatsApp messaging. If these users aren't already on Snapchat, they won't even see Status as a clone.
