First, it has not been established whether Masood actually sent or received any encrypted messages on WhatsApp prior to launching his attack. The attack outside the United Kingdom's parliament in London last Wednesday was over in just 82 seconds, but the backlash from the incident is continuing to develop. One of the killers had been closely monitored under five separate police and security service operations – and police had received a tip that the other extremist was affiliated with al-Qaeda. In 2013, British soldier Lee Rigby was savagely murdered on a London street in broad daylight by two Islamist extremists. A spokesperson for the British government's Home Office told The Intercept that it could not answer questions about Rudd's WhatsApp comments.

Encryption Battle: UK Calls for WhatsApp Backdoor After London Attack

In the wake of the deadly terror attack in London last week, UK officials have renewed pressure on Facebook's popular encrypted messaging service, WhatsApp, to create a backdoor for law enforcement. According to BBC, a WhatsApp spokeswoman said that the company was "horrified at the attack" and is cooperating with the investigation. Therefore, investigators are unable to see if Masood sent a message before the attack, and if so to whom–hence the UK investigators' request for a backdoor. The messages are so secure in fact, that even WhatsApp doesn't have access to the material that is shared. Khalid Masood, the man identified as the Westminster Bridge attacker, reportedly logged on to the app minutes before he went on a murderous rampage that left four dead and dozens wounded.
