And now the messaging app has introduced a major security update, bringing two-step verification to its log in process. To activate the new feature users must go to their settings page, select Account, and then select Two-step verification. Two-step verification will prevent intruders from activating and sending messages through WhatsApp remotely, using a user's phone number, without a six-digit passcode. Once Two-step verification is activated, no one will be able to set up a WhatsApp account with that user's phone number without the passcode.

You can choose to switch it on for yourself from Settings –> Account –> Two-step verification –> Enable. When you have two-step verification enabled, your number will not be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp within 7 days of last using WhatsApp without your passcode, the company notes. WhatsApp has rolled out two-step verification to all of its user base, the company quietly announced through an updated FAQ on its website. Once enabled, any attempt to verify your phone number on WhatsApp will require the passcode, the company says. If you ever forget your passcode, a link can be emailed to this address that will allow you to disable the two-step verification in order to access your account.
