Tech Times : WhatsApp Gains ‘Status’ Feature Akin To Stories

Instagram received it first in August, followed by Facebook Messenger and Facebook itself, both of which remain in testing across a number of countries. Going Back To WhatsApp RootsWhile the feature holds dead-on similarities, WhatsApp has positioned it as a "gift" to its users and also a coming-back-to-its-roots move. Facebook has taken a page off Snapchat's playbook once again for the nth time and cloned the popular photo messaging service's "Stories" feature for WhatsApp, renamed it "Status," and gave it encryption. WhatsApp has now become the fourth Facebook-owned entity to be inserted with the said feature. The feature is a bigger change for WhatsApp compared with Instagram, since the latter had already been infused with photo-related purposes even before the Snapchat-like features emerged.


The new WhatsApp Status feature started rolling out to users on Monday and will be available soon around the world for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone users. Now there's yet another way to share what you're doing with people you know: WhatsApp Status. The app launched nearly eight years ago, on Feb. 24, and was originally designed for sharing status updates. Snapchat fans, however, will likely notice the similarities between WhatsApp Status and the ephemeral messaging app. Between Facebook status updates, Snapchat, and Instagram Stories and good old-fashioned texting, your friends already have ample ways to find out what you're up to.

WhatsApp Status comes with end-to end encryption and ensures that the status disappears within 24 hours of being set. WhatsApp's $1.2 billion users send more than 50 billion messages across the world each day, so the scope for advertising is immense. The company's messaging app WhatsApp has announced an overhaul of its status feature which will allow users to share their statuses in the form of videos, pictures and GIFs. Every year, when Brian and I would plan projects to work on, we always talked about improving and evolving this original "text only" status feature." "Even after we added messaging in the summer of 2009, we kept the basic "text only" status functionality in WhatsApp.
