The Times : WhatsApp chats are not so secret, users warned

WhatsApp has more than a billion users and allows them to send free mobile phone messages, including group messages, over an internet connection. The company was bought by Facebook for $22 billion two years ago and introduced end-to-end encryption last April to keep messages secure from everyone but the sender and recipient. Tobias Boelter, a cryptography researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, reported the "back door" to WhatsApp's owner Facebook last year, but was told that the encryption flaw was "expected behaviour".

Gizmodo claims that this "vulnerability" is a very well-known way to spoof and circumvent encryption and messaging systems that rely upon it. It postulates that, due to how encryption keys are handled when a device goes offline and messages are not sent (for whatever reason), WhatsApp or its parent company Facebook can intercept user communications. In the situation described above, WhatsApp will re-encrypt unsent messages with the new keys and send the message without any authorization from the user.
