Facebook is suspending its collection of WhatsApp user data used for advertising across Europe.The move comes in the face of pressure from watchdog and civil liberty groups and pending investigations on data protection violations from several European countries including the U.K., Germany, France and Italy reports The Financial Times.Europe's data protection agency group also slammed WhatsApp's data collection practices in an open letter last month.

Following its pausing of the use of WhatsApp data in the UK, Facebook has stopped using data taken from its messaging service for advertising across Europe.The social network had come under pressure from the pan-European data protection agency group, the Article 29 Working Party in October.The group of privacy watchdogs said it had serious concerns over Facebook's use of the data, including user phone numbers.

Facebook has shelved parts of a controversial plan to harvest data from its WhatsApp messaging app in the UK amid pressure from the British data watchdog.The Information Commissioner's Office said the social media giant had agreed to "pause" sharing certain data between WhatsApp and Facebook as the regulator investigated whether it complied with British data laws.Amid pressure from the ICO and other European bodies, WhatsApp has now suspended most data transfers between the two apps across Europe.
