WhatsApp asked by European regulators to pause sharing user data with Facebook

WhatsApp has been warned by the pan-European privacy watchdogs over its sharing of information with Facebook and asked to pause the transfer of personal data.The gathered European Union data protection authorities, collectively known as the Article 29 Working Party, said they had serious concerns over WhatsApp's recent privacy policy change and the sharing of user phone numbers with its parent company Facebook.Article 29 said that it had "requested WhatsApp to communicate all relevant information to the Working Party as soon as possible and urged the company to pause the sharing of users' data until the appropriate legal protections could be assured" in a letter sent to the messaging service.

European Union privacy chiefs said Facebook must stop processing user data from its WhatsApp messaging service while they are investigating the privacy policy changes the company announced in August.The Article 29 Working Party, made up of privacy chiefs from across the 28-nation EU, told Facebook it had serious concerns about the sharing of WhatsApp users' data for purposes that were not included in the terms of service and privacy policy when existing users signed up to the service.The group is not the first in Europe to condemn WhatsApp's new data sharing policy.

Article 29 is considered an EU advisory group and doesn't have the power to order companies to do anything.However, in the French version of the letter, it used the strongest language it could by "urgently requesting" that WhatsApp halt the data collection.When Facebook acquired the messaging service, it promised not to collect personal user data.
