Germany Orders End to Facebook WhatsApp Data Sharing ProjectGerman data protection authorities on Tuesday ordered Facebook to delete data, such as phone numbers, it has received from its subsidiary WhatsApp.Facebook acquired the global messaging service two years ago and announced this summer that WhatsApp would begin sharing the phone numbers of its users with the social network as part of a program to synchronize the two businesses.But Hamburg's Commissioner for Data Protection ruled that Facebook "neither has obtained an effective approval from the WhatsApp users, nor does a legal basis for the data reception exist."
Germany orders Facebook to stop collecting data on WhatsApp users
Facebook has been ordered to stop collecting and storing data on WhatsApp users in Germany, marking the first regulatory challenge to a controversial data-sharing scheme that the social media company announced in August.In a statement published Tuesday, Germany's privacy watchdog said that sharing WhatsApp user data with Facebook, the messaging app's parent company, constitutes "an infringement of national data protection law."The regulatory body also ordered Facebook to delete all data that has already been transferred from WhatsApp.
