The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Centre on a petition that said privacy of WhatsApp users has been threatened by a new policy announced by Facebook which owns the mobile messaging service.A division bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal sought the government's response by 14 September on the plea which said the new policy announced by WhatsApp, Facebook Inc and Facebook India Online Pvt Ltd severely compromises the rights of the users.Under the new policy, WhatsApp will share users' personal information, including their phone numbers, with its parent company Facebook.

Privacy groups in the U.S. have complained to the Federal Trade Commission that changes last week in WhatsApp's terms and privacy policy break its previous promise that user data collected would not be used or disclosed for marketing purposes.The Electronic Privacy Information Center and the Center for Digital Democracy have described the changes as an unfair and deceptive trade practice, subject to an investigation and injunction by the FTC, in their complaint Monday.WhatsApp said last week it will be sharing some account information of users with Facebook and its companies, including the mobile phone numbers they verified when they registered with WhatsApp.

Facebook Inc. is coming under scrutiny in the U.S. and Europe for revisions to privacy policies for the free messaging service WhatsApp, which promised users those practices wouldn't change when it was sold to the social networking company two years ago.Last week, Facebook said it would start using data from the messaging app to allow advertisers to better target those users on Facebook and Instagram, in addition to allowing businesses to send messages to WhatsApp users directly.The policy shift may help WhatsApp generate revenue, but also could irk users drawn to its strong stance on privacy.
